Minneapolis Institute of Art and ‘Egypt’s Sunken Cities’
“Egypt’s Sunken Cities” showcases antiquities from one of the greatest finds in the history of underwater archaeology. Over 200 objects are featured— ranging from colossal 16-foot-tall sculptures to precious gold coins and jewelry, and bronze vessels—from two cities lost to natural disasters and the rising tides of the Mediterranean Sea. Walker Art Center Fall Programming
Highlighting key works from the Walker’s collection juxtaposed with new commissions by 12 international contemporary artists, Platforms: Collection and Commissions opens Nov. 15 and runs until Oct. 6, 2019. Every seven weeks, a new grouping will be rotated into the space, encouraging viewers to return and experience yet another new perspective. In another gallery, the first comprehensive retrospective in the U.S. devoted to the work of Siah Armajani is open now through Dec. 20.
Artist Ifrah Mansour Headlines Fall Somali Programs at Minnesota History Center
Acclaimed artist Ifrah Mansour headlines a slate of programs at the Minnesota History Center this fall that explore Somali history and culture. In November, Mansour will perform her multimedia piece «How to Have Fun in a Civil War.»
Parkway Theater Restored, Reopening
The 87-year-old South Minneapolis theater has undergone a major restoration and reopens Sept. 13 showcasing classic 35mm films and live events such as world-class performing arts, comedy and engaging speaker series. https://theparkwaytheater.com/
Food and Drink News
Minneapolis’ food and beverage scene is constantly evolving. Here are some of the newest spots to grab a bite or a sip:
- La Doña Cerveceria – A Latino-influenced brewery featuring a 1,500-square-foot soccer field on the patio beside its taproom and an art gallery with rotating local works opens in early October in North Minneapolis. The soccer field will act as the home for a 3 vs. 3 co-ed soccer league dubbed La Doña’s Fútbol and Social Club. https://dameladona.com/
- All Square – A civil rights social enterprise centered on a craft grilled cheese sandwich restaurant and professional development institute. Formerly incarcerated individuals staff the restaurant that helps reduce recidivism and serves up tasty, “guilt-free comfort food.” www.allsquarempls.co
- First Draft Taproom & Kitchen – A new taproom in the North Loop where patrons serve themselves, whether they want a craft beer, tap wine, hard cider or kombucha. A wristband tracks patrons’ spending. What makes this different from other taprooms is house-made food and wine. https://www.firstdraftmn.com/
- Edwards Dessert Kitchen – This dessert only restaurant opened in the North Loop to serve the sugar cravings of the nighttime crowd. Chef Christina Kaelberer serves items from a curried scotcheroo cookie to homemade ice cream, as well as artisan coffee, craft cocktails and some savory items. www.edwardsdessertkitchen.com
- Funky Grits – This new South Minneapolis community spot combines fast-casual counter service with a concept Chef Jared Brewington calls Urban Southern Fusion — soul, southern and comfort food with a Minnesota twist. www.funkygrits.com/
Fall Events and Happenings
Along with football games, fall color peeping and apple picking, Minneapolis has events celebrating the season and the strong arts culture:
- lluminate the Lock – Northern Lights artists bring a multi-sensory, free night of poetry, projections and music to the birthplace of Minneapolis. - ValleySCARE Returns to Valleyfair – The largest area Halloween attraction will begin terrifying guests Sept. 22 – Oct. 28 on select nights. New for 2018, the Undertakers maze will lead guests on a terrifying journey through the stages of death in a cemetery themed labyrinth. Also new is the Midway MaSCAREade scare zone, where guests will journey to the French Revolution but at this turn of the century ball everyone has something to hide. ValleySCARE.com
- Gudrun Sjödén—A Colourful Universe exhibition – This U.S. premiere installation examines Gudrun’s illustrious career through her original watercolors, materials from archives and catalogs and samples of her textiles and clothing.
